Fasting

Some general rules for fasting before lab tests

1. Preparation: Plan your meals accordingly the day before your test. Make sure to eat a balanced meal to sustain you through the fasting period.

2. Fasting Period: Typically, you'll need to fast for about 8 to 12 hours before your test. This means no eating or drinking anything except water.

3. Water Intake: Unless instructed otherwise, you can drink water during your fast. Staying hydrated is important.

4. Avoid certain substances: Do not smoke, chew gum, or drink alcohol during your fasting period as these can interfere with test results.

5. Medication: If you take prescription medications, ask your doctor if you should continue to take them as usual before your test.

6. Morning of the Test: Brush your teeth without swallowing any toothpaste or water. Do not use mouthwash or chew gum.

7. Arrival at the Lab: Arrive at the lab or healthcare facility at your appointed time. Let them know if you've had anything to eat or drink other than water during your fasting period.

8. After the Test: Once your test is completed, you can resume your normal diet. It's a good idea to start with a light meal before moving on to heavier foods.
